Salviati in Piazza San Marco for "Murano Illumina il Mondo"
Venice, November 24, 2023 – The lights of the chandelier that Salviati created in collaboration with the English artist Cornelia Parker were turned on at 4:30 pm in Piazza San Marco for the first edition of “Murano Illumina il Mondo”.
The work will be on display to the public until February 28, 2024 as part of an overall exhibition of twelve Murano glass chandeliers, created by twelve renowned international artists and designers.
The chandelier created by Salviati, following the creative impulse of the artist Cornelia Parker, is inspired by the one depicted in the painting “The Arnolfini Portrait” by Jan van Eyck (1434). A complex project that has seen the use of different glassworking techniques, from the mold blowing for the central bodies and cups, to glass fusion for the development of the six arms created in collaboration with the master Nicola Moretti.
An important creative stimulus that has allowed Salviati to exploit the knowledge base developed over 160 years of history.
“Salviati is delighted to have collaborated with artist Cornelia Parker, recognizing her creative genius
and her many influences and inspirations. Many affinities have been born that we hope will continue
to develop in the future.”
Stefano Schiavon, President Salviati
Cornelia Parker comments ‘‘It has been such a pleasure collaborating with the skilled glassmakers of Salviati, and it is my sincere hope that this chandelier marks the beginning of an ongoing creative relationship’’.
“Murano Illumina il Mondo” is a project that aims to promote the island of Murano and its glass industry internationally. The exhibition will take place in the spaces of the Procuratie Vecchie, replacing the traditional Christmas lights: a unique opportunity to admire the creations of renowned international artists and designers and to discover the beauty and mastery of Murano glassmaking. The project is a collaboration between The Venice Glass Week, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, LE STANZE DEL VETRO, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Pentagram Stiftung, Istituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti, Consorzio Promovetro Murano, Comune di Venezia.
